Several customers have asked how our cattle withstand the cold weather. With their thick hides and long winter coats, they're comfortable during the cold weather as long as they are well fed. Because cattle are ruminate animals, microbial fermentation in the rumen results in heat production.
One factor that changes when temperatures drop is that cattle will eat more. A cow's best friend during cold weather is the farmer. Harry, Jules and Lee are out there every morning unrolling large bales of hay for them to eat and clearing the ice from their troughs so they'll have water to drink.
Michael Pollan's interview on Oprah is interesting to see on her website . He's thoroughly researched our country's food production and his comments are thoughtful and enlightening.
